Hosted by Dancemakers and the Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence, the Cinq à Sept reception features an overview of the past 18 months of artistic research that has been commissioned to inform the future of the venerated dance institution.
Beyond lip service to diversity and outreach, what does a liberatory Dancemakers look like and how does it function? How can a dance institution’s year-to-year activities be actively situated in the calendars of diverse communities? How can a dance institution be artistically empowering, equitable and safe(r) for BIPOC and working class artists? What are the structural changes that Dancemakers is putting into place to work more equitably with independent practitioners and diverse dance artists? What kinds of tools and understandings do we need to cultivate to navigate relationships in professional practice with more ease?
From December 2022 to July 2023, artists Ange Loft, Pam Tzeng, Ravyn Wngz and Shaista Latif were engaged in artistic research residencies created and framed with lead researcher Helen Yung. This July 2023, the research culminates in two weeks of workshops and a research presentation.
