Small Things: Tea, Teachings & Being Together is a series of creative workshops led by Indigenous and settler artists presented by Scadding Court Community Centre, and Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence, with the support of the Toronto Arts Council.
Small things hold worlds: a greeting, a stitch made in time, a single stroke of colour, a courageous moment of connection, and the care to transform that which has been rejected or discarded into something beautiful.
Artistic intelligence may appear modest, but it reminds us that we are surrounded by stories and treasures, and teaches us to pay attention, to work slowly, to see possibilities and life where others see death or decay.
Small Things explores the connections and relationships that emerge when people make something together, when communities gather in shared space, when we slow down enough to connect and journey together.
Hand-Drawn Lines
Artist-designer Anita Matusevics guides participants in contemplative observation with the hand-drawn line, tracing what’s actually here in our space, bodies, and hearts. Together we will create a large collaborative drawing using a variety of media.

At 6:30pm, we will host a short artist talk with Anita about her current exhibition, One Thousand Ways.
Weaving Threads
“‘Wearability’ is not the end of life,” says artist-facilitator Joe Lewis. Learn how to transform old clothing and fabrics into new ‘threads’! Join us for a workshop on weaving as a process of transformation, taking what exists and giving it new form. Participants will be guided on creating a woven (upcycled) textile piece, and have the option to take home their own cardboard loom.

Making Inks
Artist-educator Heather Frise invites you to come experiment with making inks crafted from found and natural materials. Play with different ink recipes and explore how the colours flow on the page. Follow your own curiosity, and see where these handmade inks take you!

Place-Based Art
Artist Ange Loft leads a creative exploration of Indigenous pottery patterns from the region, and traditional maps from the Treaty Guide for Torontonians. Craft place-based art that explore Indigenous geographies, treaties, and connection to the more-than-human.

Beading Stories
Artist Catherine Blackburn offers a hands-on beading workshop based on her very own Aboriginal Classics art series which explores themes of identity, language, and story. Participants will learn to bead on an unconventional medium, using teabags as story-holder. A tactile, meditative experience.
