Womb Meditation
Womb Meditation
Womb Meditation is an East-meets-West, art-meets-science journey through the uterus, ovaries, and the primordial.
Led by artist Helen Yung, Womb Meditation is a creative sonic experience through the body – weaving breath, imagery, science, and story. You will be guided. We will sound together for a short time as a group, similar to how you may breath together in a yoga class.
After the meditation, we will take a short break with refreshments, and then there will be ample time for conversation… How is your relationship with the womb? What does it mean to create in community? Describe your relationship to assistance. You are invited to share a story, a question, or an intention. Or you can be an active listener.
At the performances marked by an asterisk (*) below, the artist will end the performance by injecting herself with medically-prescribed hormones, as part of her IUI, an assisted reproductive process.
This is performance art. (Unlike a theatre performance, “performance art” means that this is real. The needle, the hormones, the IUI, everything.) You don’t have to be seeking motherhood, parenthood or assisted/collaborative reproduction to attend. You may be in menopause. You may have never been a menstruator. You should be curious, kind and gentle in the room. Please respect and be mindful of the diverse choices and experiences of other attendees.
Free & PWYW tickets here. Limited dates June 20 – July 5 (see below).
If you need to perform your own hormone injection(s) during the event’s timing, you are welcome to bring your materials and self-administer them at the same time. For the event at TRIO Mississauga, the clinic will offer safe materials using saline solution for attendees that want to participate (totally optional). Are you curious about egg freezing, have you already been doing IVF, or are you (thinking of becoming) a reproductive collaborator? Bring your questions.
Womb Meditation engages reproductive science with art and imagination – combining creative and medical knowing through collective practice in community contexts. Drawing on embodied practices and Chinese metaphysics taught to her by master artists and revered teachers, the experience that the artist offers is at once performance and practice. Womb Meditation is an invitation to sense, and an act of sensemaking. The work is a delicate blurring of the intimate and the social, of private and public life, of personal and professional labour.
This performance is part of a series of works about what Art has to offer ART (assisted reproductive technologies). If you would like to stay informed about this series, please .
